Can a shot fired into the air hurt anyone?

It depends on the angle at which the gun is pointed, but a bullet falling from the sky can even kill! In the case of a shot fired precisely upwards, at an angle of 90 degrees, the projectile can hurt, but hardly kill. Because of air resistance, the bullet returns at a speed lower than that at the time of firing. The popcorn of a common weapon, such as a 38 caliber revolver, reaches the ground at about 250 km/h – below 350 km/h, the minimum necessary to pierce human tissue. But, depending on the design of the bullet, there is no escape. “For a projectile with aerodynamics similar to that of an AR-15 rifle bullet, the impact speed will be greater than 350 km/h, even in a vertical shot”, says professor Sérgio Morelhão, from USP’s Institute of Physics. In that case, the way out is to walk with a steel umbrella! :- P

GET DOWN!

See the damage caused by firing a 38 caliber gun at different angles

In the shot given exactly upwards, at an angle of 90 degrees, the bullet leaves the trezoitão at almost 1 050 km/h. As soon as it leaves the barrel, the bullet begins to decelerate, due to the force of gravity and air resistance, until it reaches zero speed – around 720 m high -, when it starts to fall. It is difficult to predict the point of arrival of the bludger. This is because the wind alters the trajectory of the projectile, which can fall tens of meters from the firing point. During the fall, air resistance holds the bump, preventing the popcorn from reaching the ground with the same speed as it left. About 25 seconds after firing, the bullet returns at about 250 km/h. It is not a lethal value – that is, above 350 km/h -, but the thud is strong and can even kill!

GET OUT OF THE WAY!

If the shot is fired at 45 degrees, the final speed will be around 230 km/h – less than the deadly 350 km/h. But on that slope, the risk of the bludger hitting someone while going full tilt is greater.

DEADLINE

In the shot given with the gun at about 5 degrees, there is no way out: the projectile hits the ground with lethal speed. This after traveling up to 500 m. That is, it is unlikely that you will catch some unsuspecting person along the way…
