Where do mosquitoes go in the winter?

They simply die at this time of year as they cannot stand the low temperatures. In general, adult mosquitoes die when temperatures drop close to 15°C. The only reason the species is not endangered is because not all mosquitoes are in the adult stage at this time of year. “During the winter, the eggs and larvae of the mosquito have a very slow metabolism, which resumes its normal development when it starts to warm up again. These aquatic phases are more durable and resist the winter”, says biochemist José Maria Soares Barata, from the School of Public Health at the University of São Paulo (USP).
