Definition of Drive (computer science)

In computing, drive (plural drives) is an English word that, in computing, translates to «unit.» A drive is a device that reads and/or writes data to a storage medium such as floppy disks, optical discs, etc.

They are drives:

– CD drives (or CD reader), DVDs, Blu-rays.

– Hard drives (or just hard drive).

– Floppy drives (or floppy drives).

– ZIP drives.

– USB flash drives

– Magneto-optical units, etc.

Drive should not be confused with the word driver (translated as controller), which is software that allows an operating system to control a specific device that has been connected to the computer.

The term «drive» is also common for virtual storage services, such as:

-Google Drive.

-Microsoft OneDrive.
