As soon as winter comes, the city of Yakutia in Siberia turns into the coldest modern freezer on the planet. Different remote and sparsely populated places have lower temperatures than this place, you only have to think of Antarctica. However, Yakutia stands out for being the coldest city in the world that is also home to about 280,000 inhabitants.
Undoubtedly for the warm landscapes of Latin America and the not so severe cold of Europe, the city of Yakutia is the perfect setting to die of cold. But all its inhabitants have shown that living in a frozen city is not so bad when nature makes up for the difficulties.

How do you live in the coldest city in the world?
Small communities have survived frozen ecosystems for decades, but that does not mean that a city is ready to face the ice. Somehow, the cold determines what is done or not done in Yakutia.
It is possible that in Canada the Inuit lived in igloos, but in Siberia things are different. This city has accepted both modernity and the limitations of an extreme climate. For example, buildings are built on columns to prevent the heat from sinking them into the permafrost.

Likewise, there is no way out without gloves, a scarf, boots, a jacket, a hat and everything that can cover the body from low temperatures. Social life depends on the weather; if it is too cold the exits are limited or only the necessary stops are made.
Fish, one of the basic foods in this city, is seen in containers on the streets, as if it were a flower stall. The cold is strong enough not to have to spend on refrigerators.

Behind the magical winter, there is danger
No one stays outside long enough, even the body wouldn’t allow it. It is said that after a few minutes the fingers go numb, the body begins to feel the ravages of the cold and then it is time to retire.

Although many dream of snowy landscapes and a cold that will keep us at home drinking hot chocolate, the reality is that winter in Yakutia is harsh. The cold forces the human being to explore his chances of survival, to be attentive to his weaknesses so as not to be surprised by the extreme weather.
The landscape of this city can go from magical to tragic in no time. Coats, games in the snow or sledding are far from becoming a hobby. At least not in Yakutia, the coldest city in the world.
