It can change color because of pigments contained in some foods and medicines we ingest or as a result of some illness. Under normal conditions, the color of pee varies from a light yellow, almost transparent, to dark yellow. This yellowish tone comes from three blood pigments – urochrome, bilirubin and creatinine -, which are filtered by the kidney while urine is produced. The more water we ingest, the more we dilute these pigments and, consequently, the clearer the pee becomes. “For this reason, clear urine is almost always a sign that we are well hydrated”, says Cláudio Luders, a nephrologist at Hospital das Clínicas, in São Paulo. GREEN
Despite its name, methylene blue – a drug used in cases of poisoning – gives the jet a greenish tint. The green is the result of mixing the yellow pee with the blue medication.
DARK ORANGE
Foods that contain large amounts of beta-carotene – such as carrots, pumpkin and papaya – can make pee orange. Some antibiotics and vitamin B also have the same effect.
FROM PINK TO RED
It could just be that beetroot from lunch or, which already complicates things, the presence of blood in the urine. In that case, you need to see a doctor. Bloody pee can indicate serious illnesses, from infections to cancer
DARK BROWN
If the thing turns black, it could be a sign of a liver problem. Dark piss can still roll in athletes after extreme exertion, when the body releases another pigment, myoglobin, which darkens the stream.
CLOUDY
Milky-looking pee could be a sign of a urinary tract infection. And, if there is also a large amount of foam, the thing can be more serious. This is one of the symptoms of nephritis, the inflammation of the kidneys.
DARK PURPLE
Urine color is also used “on purpose” in medical diagnoses. If, when exposed to sunlight, the pee turns purple, it is an indication of porphyria, a metabolism disease that, in general, is difficult to identify.
