Why do wounds itch when healing?

It may sound funny, but itching is the least symptom of pain. “When we injure any region of the body, an inflammatory process appears”, explains dermatologist Luiz Carlos Cucê, from the Hospital das Clínicas in São Paulo. Nerve terminals are stimulated and we feel pain, which increases according to the severity of the inflammation. When healing begins, the inflammation gradually decreases and so does the discomfort, until it becomes just an itch. It is a sign that the place has not yet completely deflated. But it’s almost good now.
