Why do we have to stop buying pugs?

An intense fever to acquire pug recently spilled over into almost the entire world. The funny and cute faces of these canines became the weakness of many, but the reality is that their characteristics are genetic defects that put this breed of dog at risk.

It doesn’t seem so cute when it comes to the fact that their genetically mutated (to make them small) flattened noses make it difficult for them to breathe and eat. Or that its coiled tail represents a risk of paralysis, due to its shape.

To this short list of mutations Several more can be added that imply suffering and collapse in the health of the pug. This is an anatomical disaster that leaves out tenderness and reveals to us the strong genetic transformation of these animals for the mere pleasure of the human being.

But these factors do not matter when there is money involved or when you want to have a dog that is “in fashion”. In the past, pugs were different: dogs with long, straight tails, taller bodies, and less wrinkled faces.

Let’s protect the health of pugs by adopting other dogs

The point of this article is not to make you hate pugs, but rather to think about how you acquire or adopt a pet. Make sure that you are not contributing to continue a chain of abuse and genetic mutations.

What we want are dogs that are healthy, happy and capable of living a dignified life. The goal is that your choice is not defined by a particular race, because that is the least important thing. The magic is in the simple fact of having a partner.

The British Veterinary Association stated that dog breeding and purchasing practices should concern all of us, since the well-being of the dog is involved:

«The rise in popularity of these dogs has increased animal suffering and resulted in fragile pets for owners, so we encourage people to consider choosing a healthier breed or mix.» – (Sean Wensley, President of the BVA)

Let’s find a method for dogs to be healthy and reach a home in the best possible condition. Let’s stop looking at pure breeds, let’s prevent more animals from suffering and change the way we choose that friend of a lifetime.
