Why do fire trucks and ambulances have text backwards?

Reader question – Matheus Lehmann Giacoboni, Viamão, RS

So drivers ahead can read the writing correctly when they look in the rear view mirror. Although it is not foreseen in the Brazilian Traffic Code, the use of the name backwards facilitates the identification of ambulances and fire trucks, which have priority in traffic and enjoy free movement, parking and stopping. This way, drivers take less time to identify the emergency vehicle and can take their turn. It is a custom in several countries, such as the USA, Canada, France and even in Arabic-speaking countries, which invert the word both in the proper alphabet and in English.
