Why are salt, sugar and water used in the preparation of homemade whey?

The recipe is simple: 1 liter of water, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Diarrhea means great loss of water from the body, causing such dehydration that it can lead to death, especially children. The secret of the effectiveness of the serum is that its composition simulates the liquid that we have inside the organism. “This liquid is composed of water, plus sodium and glucose – elements present, respectively, in salt and sugar. Thus, homemade serum balances the internal environment by simulating what happens inside the body”, says pediatrician Adalberto Stape, from Hospital Albert Einstein, in São Paulo, SP. Glucose is an energy source that helps the absorption of salt, whose composition attracts water molecules, keeping it inside the vessels.

Salt and sugar are, therefore, like entry points for water in the body’s cells. “Without the mixture, the ingestion of pure water does not hydrate, as the body cannot retain the liquid”, says pediatrician Luiz Afonso Mariz, from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).
