1) TAKING IT IN THE BICO
Quiet and lazy, Good Life avoided any kind of work. Only when things got tough did he steal something that would earn money and give it to Pedro Bala. He knew the city like no one else, especially the places to get drunk and dance. At 19, he was already a complete rogue: he played the guitar, ate and drank the best and seduced mulatto women.
2) HERO OF THE POOR
The Capitães da Areia were a group of abandoned minors who lived off petty theft and lived in an old warehouse, in the port area of Salvador. With the ability to plan robberies and a spirit of authority, Pedro Bala soon became leader. One day he wanted to be the head of the city’s rascals, but in his adult life he became a proletarian militant.
3) MOTHER, SISTER, GIRLFRIEND
After her mother died of smallpox, dora came to town looking for a job. But no house wanted a “daughter of pockmarks”. Wandering the streets, she met João Grande and Professor and, little by little, gained the sympathy of the other boys, who saw in her the sister and mother they never had. 4) IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER
When a priest went to the store to preach the word of God, Lollipop heard the call. When she knelt down to pray for the first time, one of the boys made fun of Lollipop and gave him a beating. But over time, he abandoned violence. He started to avoid fights and robberies, started selling newspapers, worked as a shoeshine boy and finally became a monk.
5) THE INFILTRATE
No legs was the «spy». Because he was lame, he feigned pain to win the sympathy of the housewives. After asking for food and shelter, he would discover valuables in the residence and inform his accomplices. However, conscience weighed when he deceived Dona Ester, a lady who treated him like a son and dressed him in a sailor’s outfit. He died in a chase with the police
6) CUTE BUT ORDINARY
Considered the most elegant in the class, Cat never slept in the shed. One night, while visiting the area, he fell in love with the prostitute Dalva, an older woman with a strong body and a sensual face. They became a pair of crooks: she attracted men and he deceived them. He looted the money of many farmers and merchants, stole at cards and sold non-existent land.
7) SOFT HEART
big john went to live on the street after his father, a cart driver, was run over by a truck. It was easy to understand his nickname: he was the tallest and strongest of the Sand Captains. He wasn’t very smart, but he had an equally huge heart: he always jumped in when someone mistreated the younger boys. He ended up embarking as a sailor on a cargo ship.
8) TIETE DO CANGAÇO
Volta-Seca he felt out of place in the big city. He was always imitating the voices of sertanejo animals and asking the Professor to read the news in the newspapers about Lampião. At age 16, on a train heading to Aracaju, he fulfilled his dream: he met the king of cangaço and joined his gang. Years later, he was convicted of 15 deaths – but is said to have shot more than 60.
9) STORIES NOT TO SLEEP
Teacher he was the only one who could read, even though he had studied for just over a year. An expert at stealing books, every night he would tell adventure stories to his friends. A skilled draftsman, he earned a living doing portraits of tourists – from one of them, he stole the overcoat he always wore. He became a famous painter, with many works about abandoned children and beggars.
