Visitor Question or Comment:

Who invented the floppy disk and what is it used for?

Response from ALEGSA.com.ar:

Floppy disks were developed at IBM Laboratories in San Jose, California in 1967. Researcher David Noble proposed a flexible 8-inch medium for storing information. Hence the name floppy disk, meaning flexible disk. These first disks were used in the IBM company.

In 1971, IBM introduced the 8-inch memory disk. The data was stored on the magnetic surface of that disk. At the time it was considered a very important advance due to its portability.

Shugart Associates began developing floppy disk decks in 1973. The interface developed there is still the basis for all floppy disk decks. Even the company IBM used this interface on the PC.

Wang Laboratories asked Shugart Associates (later Shugart Corporation) to create a 5 1/4-inch drive for their desktop computers. These were very popular and were a standard in personal computers.

The company Seagate Technology is founded in 1979 for the creation of floppy disks, but also hard disks. By the end of that year they presented a 6 MB capacity hard drive (the ST-506).

In 1981, the Sony company released the 3½-inch floppy disk. These were smaller, more resistant and with more capacity than their predecessor.

It quickly replaced 5 1/4-inches, becoming a standard on Apple computers and PCs.
