Who cheats more: men or women?

At least among Brazilians, the kings of betrayal are men. By the way, if jumping a fence were a sport, it would certainly be among the most practiced in the country. This is what indicates a survey carried out by the University of São Paulo (USP), which heard the confessions about infidelity from almost 4,000 married people in 17 cities. According to the study, half of men have had their getaways at least once during their marriage. Among women, the average rate of infidelity is much lower, around 22%. To understand such a difference, it is necessary to consider biological factors and typical traditions of our country. “First, we must bear in mind that men have a very potent sex hormone, androgen. This can lead to greater sexual aggressiveness towards women, influenced by a milder hormone, estrogen. Secondly, Brazilian culture gives men “freedom” to have sex and diversify their partners”, says psychiatrist Carmita Abdo, coordinator of the USP research.

One important aspect is that the two sexes cheat for very different reasons. While the guys usually just want to unload the horny and get physical satisfaction, women tend to dive headlong into the relationship, getting much more involved. “Almost always, they want to break off one of the relationships and dedicate themselves to the one that most satisfies their emotional need”, says Carmita. The survey also showed the most common age for extramarital affairs. Among women, young girls are the most prone. In the case of males, the title of betrayal goes to middle-aged men: the man between 40 and 50 years old. Another curious aspect is that infidelity varies according to the region of the country. On the women’s side, cariocas are the most unfaithful. In the ranking of men, the leaders are the Bahians (check out the complete list in the table below).

“In Brazil, the Carioca woman is seen as a symbol of sexuality and freedom. The Bahian man, on the other hand, is the heir of a sexist tradition that gives the male gender the ‘right’ to have multiple partners,” says Carmita.
