White lion Mojo remains missing

. » filed a criminal complaint against the owner of Mojo with the Magdeburg public prosecutor’s office today for animal cruelty so that the facts of the case can finally be clarified. We want to make sure Mojo is not suffering and is housed humanely.”

The three and a half year old lion Mojo was kept by a part-time farmer from Saxony-Anhalt from the end of 2018 to the beginning of 2021 on his farm near Magdeburg. assumes that the owner bought the lion as a cub from a Czech breeder. Due to animal welfare violations, the district of Börde decreed that the private individual had to give up the adult lion male and house it elsewhere in accordance with animal welfare. For a short time, Mojo was accommodated for a few weeks in the Bergzoo in Halle because the owner wanted to build a new enclosure, for which he never received a building permit. He has since been banned from generally keeping lions in the county. had offered to place Mojo in a sanctuary, but the owner declined the offer.

Since the Higher Administrative Court of Saxony-Anhalt confirmed the ban on keeping Mojo against the owner in February 2021, the white lion has disappeared. Loud According to information from the owner, the animal is said to have been housed in the Netherlands – the Dutch authorities have not confirmed this.

«We have to assume the worst,» says Sven Wirth. “European-bred big cats are highly sought after in Asia, both dead and alive. Some animals are sold alive, others are killed right here in Europe and their remains are either sold or processed into traditional medicine. We hope that Mojo was spared this fate and that we will find him healthy again. The offer is still valid: and our partners can take Mojo into a sanctuary and offer him a better life.”

So far there is no uniform regulation for the private keeping of wild animals at the federal level. There is only a reporting requirement for protected animal species. Private individuals who acquire a wild animal as a pet are usually overwhelmed after a short time with the high housing requirements of the animals and cannot provide them with animal welfare-friendly housing. is therefore calling for binding laws that generally prohibit the keeping of wild animals in private hands for reasons of animal and species protection.
