Which superheroes have had a female version?

Virtually all the most important. After the end of World War II, hero comics began to lose appeal. Editors believed that performing a “sex change” on well-known brands would serve to attract female readers. At Marvel and DC publishers, the pioneers were Hawkgirl (wife of Hawkman), in 1940, and Miss America (loosely linked to Captain America), in 1943. But the first to really hit the ground running was Batwoman, who appeared in 1956, it was published until 1979 and resumed in 2006.

SPIDER WOMEN

CREATED IN 1977, 1984 and 1998
The first, and even today the most famous, is Jessica Drew, who has powers very different from those of Peter Parker: flight, bioelectric shots and secretion of seductive pheromones. She was a renowned SHIELD Agent and Avenger for a long time. Then came Julia Carpenter, who gained powers similar to Parker’s thanks to a dose of «spider venom and exotic plant extracts». Currently, she goes by the name of Madame Teia. Finally, there was young Mattie Franklin, who received her gifts via magic but died in 2010.

WOMAN-HULK

CREATED IN 1980
Attorney Jennifer Walters gained super strength when she received a blood transfusion from her cousin, Bruce Banner (the Hulk). With an advantage: she doesn’t get dumb or angry when she transforms. She was once part of the Fantastic Four and the Avengers and is always providing “legal advice” to her colleagues.

THOR

CREATED IN 2014
Since 2014, the hero’s former girlfriend, Jane Foster, has taken on the role. She managed to lift the hammer Mjolnir, abandoned by the original Thor on the Moon after he was no longer deemed worthy to use it. At the time, fans complained about the change, but ironically, the first issues of the magazine sold more than before. The new Thor has already been integrated into the Avengers

BATGIRL

CREATED IN 1967
The first, Betty Kane, appeared in 1961, but soon disappeared. Six years later, the producers of the TV series batman asked DC Comics for a character to be introduced in season three. It was then decided to take advantage of Barbara Gordon, Commissioner Gordon’s daughter, as Batman’s new partner.

SUPERGIRL

CREATED IN 1959
Kara Zor-El was sent to Earth to be cared for by her cousin, Kal-El (Superman). Like him, she developed powers thanks to our yellow Sun. She died in one of the most dramatic moments in DC Comics history, in 1985, but was “revived” in the 90s and in 2000. She won a TV series, shown in Brazil on Warner Channel

AMERICAN DREAM

CREATED IN 1999
The most popular «XX version» of Captain America is actually his girlfriend’s cousin. Shannon Carter was fascinated by the hero and worked as a guide at Avengers Mansion. When she was drafted into the group, she trained her body to the max in various fighting styles and developed a disc-shaped weapon. But she doesn’t have superpowers.

RESCUE

CREATED IN 2009
After years serving Tony Stark, the executive secretary Pepper Potts won her own armor of “Iron Woman” (model Mark 1616) when the “boss” started to be pursued by Norman Osborn (the Green Goblin, great enemy of Spider-Man ). But Pepper had to destroy the equipment after its artificial intelligence system fell in love with her. In a parallel universe where Spider-Man never existed, the Rescue is his girlfriend, Mary Jane.

X-23

CREATED IN 2004
After failed attempts to repeat the experiment that gave Wolverine adamantium, the solution was to clone him. Twenty-two replicates failed—but the 23rd, lacking the Y chromosome, succeeded. Baptized as Laura Kinney, she became a student at the Xavier Institute and the Avengers Academy and, after the saga secret warsassumed the name Wolverine
