What we miss about the citizen culture of Mockus

Today is the birthday of former Mayor Antanas Mockus, and we celebrate it longing for his civic culture.

10 years ago, Antanas Mockus, today’s birthday, took the reins of Bogotá for the first time (he was mayor again in 2002) with the aim of directing it towards paths never seen before. He dreamed of a cultured, respectful city, where people were not aggressive with each other and the laws will be respected not out of fear, but because that is the right thing to do.

His program for our city was called «citizen culture,» and it was a plan to return to educated and respectful Bogota citizens through pedagogy and play, so to speak, and not of punishment. Today, when our city is scared of the aggressiveness that is felt in the air just by opening the window, we miss things like…

The mimes who tried to make the zebras respect

The red card of Bogotá Coqueta to make the Bogotanos play fair

The civic superhero who cleaned up the city

There are other things that many people do not miss about his administration, such as his desire to be president, his carrot rumba, his wedding in a circus… But one thing cannot be denied, Antanas Mockus, with or without pants, is an icon of the Bogotá we once were.
