In this age range, it is worth noting that the teeth are in a stage of formation, which is why they are more sensitive to knocks and, for that reason, to cause discomfort.

From the Health area of the Municipal Corporation of Florida (Comudef), through the Sowing Smiles program, prepared a list with recommendations to deal with these incidents and to know, simply, what steps to take to act in the face of dental trauma.

First of all, you should always remain calm and reassure the child. Then check that the child is breathing well and assess the severity of the injury. And something key: before any event, always go to the dentist, because these measures are preliminary and do not replace the vision of a professional. In addition, it is important to take into consideration that dental care due to trauma is guaranteed by the Ges-Auge benefit, independent of the minor’s pension system.

As a next step, it is essential to carefully check the mouth and, if there is bleeding, clean it with water or a clean tissue. If the wounds have soil, clean with abundant drinking water. Also, it is recommended to apply cold cloths or ice to avoid inflammation.

In younger children, it is key that, once the accident has occurred, the use of a bottle and pacifier is avoided. In case the tooth is broken and a piece is left in the hand, clean it and take it to dental care.

What if a baby tooth falls out? In no case put back in the mouth. On the other hand, if it is a definitive piece that falls, pick it up (without touching the root), wash it with water and transport it in a container with milk, saliva or water. Ideally, in the first 30 minutes.
