Visitor Question or Comment:

What material is the microprocessor made of?

Response from ALEGSA.com.ar:

The main material from which microprocessors (and other computer boards, too) are made is silicon that is mined from sand. The material melts at a high temperature (1370 degrees Celsius) and very slowly the crystal forms. That crystal (several hundred kilos in weight) is cut to form a cylinder. Then that cylinder is sliced into wafers or discs 10 microns thick (tenth of the thickness of a human hair), hundreds of microprocessors are made from each wafer.

Internally the microprocessor is a small square of silicon, called a matrix, it is made up of millions of transistors, these transistors are distributed and placed in a special way

The wafers are coated with an insulating layer made of silicon oxide, another microprocessor compound.

Each microprocessor board has a protective plastic capsule (in some cases they can be ceramic) and hundreds of metal pins are also incorporated. These very fine metallic pins are usually made of gold.

Another material used in microprocessors can be germanium, although it is more expensive.

In the future, they will also be made from materials that are being investigated, such as graphene, molybdenite and silicon carbide.
