What is the yoyo effect and how to avoid it?
Are you one of those who lose weight just to recover the lost weight and even more? Say NO MORE to yoyo dieting with these tips!
It has happened to most of us at some point in our lives. We judiciously go on a diet and in a certain time (months, years, depending on each person) we reach the weight we wanted to achieve, a triumph! But after a short time we discover that we start to gain weight again, why? Is it that nature conspires against our body?
What we have just described is called by health professionals as rebound effect or yoyo dietand it is a vicious circle in which the person goes on a strict diet and manages to lose weight, but in the long term they gain weight again, then they go on a diet again and start the cycle again.
How to avoid the yoyo effect? Take note of the following tips…
- Don’t lose weight too fast Experts advise a diet with which you lose approximately one kilo a week. If you lose weight faster, your chances of falling into the rebound effect go up like a yoyo.
- Take a maintenance diet: If after reaching your goals you return to your bad eating habits, you will regain the weight in a very short time. Ask your nutritionist to help you design a maintenance diet, and make it a lifestyle!
- Keep thinking about yourself: Some people stop weighing themselves when they finish the diet, mistake! Weigh yourself regularly, every fortnight, for example, and write down your weight. If you gain more than a kilo, consult your nutritionist, because you are starting the uphill of the yoyo effect.
- Food is not a reward or a punishment: You must change your mentality if you want to cut the string of the yoyo; stop using food as a reward or punishment, that only leads you to eat to fill emotional gaps, not to feed your body.
- Write: Make a list of the benefits of losing weight and keep it in sight, that will motivate you not to maintain your weight.
- Eat every 3 hours: That way you will speed up your metabolism and you will not gain weight so easily.
