What is the world of The Wizard of Oz like?

1. Farm in Kansas

Officially, the journey begins here – a country estate in the middle of nowhere, where Dorothy lives with her aunt and uncle (in the 1939 film, there are still three servants). A powerful hurricane takes the house away, but the whole family manages to take shelter in a shelter… except for the girl and her dog, Toto.

2. Munchkin City

The house falls into this village full of flowers and dwarves, crushing the Wicked Witch of the East. Dorothy takes the dead woman’s glass slippers, which infuriates her sister, the Wicked Witch of the West. Glinda, the Good Witch of the North (in the film) or the South (in the book), guides her along the yellow brick road

3. Cornfield

At a crossroads, Dorothy finds the Scarecrow, stuck on a stake in the middle of a field. He says he is unhappy, since, without a brain, he cannot look like a human and, therefore, cannot scare away the crows. She then decides to accompany her and ask the Wizard to give her a mind.

4. Grove

The orchard with apple trees that talk and fight is the home of the Tin Woodman. Dorothy and the Scarecrow oil his knuckles to get him moving again. He soon reveals that his biggest dream is to have a heart and get emotional. At the exit, there is a small house surrounded by birds of various types, including peacocks.

5. Forest

In this thick forest, the Lion appears and scares the trio. He tries to attack Toto, but is slapped by Dorothy and starts crying like a child. The truth is, he’s a complete freak, so he teams up with his new friends to head to the Emerald City and ask the Wizard of Oz for some courage.

6. Poppy Field

At the exit of the forest, the group finds this garden with flowers of different shades. Excited by the sight of the Emerald City, right on the other side, they try to run past, but a poison placed in the poppies by the Wicked Witch makes those who are flesh and blood sleep. After a while, Glinda wakes up the heroes

7. City of Emeralds

In the film, the capital of Oz is made entirely of this material. In the book, the precious stone is only used for decoration – the inhabitants are forced to wear “protective” glasses that make them see everything green and shiny. The Wizard promises to grant the quartet’s wishes if they kill the Wicked Witch.

8. Haunted Forest

In their search for the Witch, they find themselves in the home of ghoulish owls and ravens, roosting in gnarled plantations. The winged monkeys, servants of the sorceress, appear and beat everyone, taking only Dorothy and Toto to the castle. The other three are lying on the ground trying to recover.

9. Witch’s Castle

The construction is on top of a mountain and is inhabited by several guards with green skin and furry hats. The Scarecrow, the Lion and the Tin Man manage to sneak in in disguise. Dorothy, who was trapped in an isolated room, escapes and throws water on the Witch of the West, which ends up melting.

10. Chinatown

In the book, the group passes through this village made entirely of porcelain – including the residents! If any of them breaks, they get a patch and go down a rung in the social hierarchy. At the top are the princes and princesses, who are “perfect”. If any of them leave town, they become a shelf ornament.

11. Glinda’s Castle

Made of rubies and all red, he only appears in the book. Glinda tells Dorothy that the shoes «stolen» at the beginning of the story are magical. With three taps on her heel and the phrase «There’s no better place than home», she wakes up in Kansas and everything turns out to be a dream. Or is it not?
