What is the title «Doctor Honoris Causa»?

READER QUESTION Juka Goulart

It is an honor given by universities to people who stand out in their field. Generally, these personalities are already respected for their work by sectors of society, but they do not always have a degree or specialization. So much so that the term means «by cause of honor” in Latin. That is, she became someone of prominence in that area and honored her to the point of being considered a doctor.

But the title is also surrounded by politics. Former presidents José Sarney (1985-1990), Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1995-2002) and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2010) have already won it, both from national and foreign institutions. Musicians are also remembered: Maria Bethânia, Milton Nascimento and Naná Vasconcelos have already been honored.
