What is the origin of pizza?

Its creators were even the Italians. But there are several hypotheses to explain the arrival of the ancestor of pizza in Italy. The main one tells that, three centuries before Christ, the Phoenicians used to add toppings of meat and onion to bread. Only their bread was like flatbread, round and flat like a disc. The mixture was also adopted by the Turks, who preferred toppings based on mutton and fresh yogurt.

“During the Crusades, in the 11th century, Turkish bread was taken to the Italian port of Naples”, says sociologist Gabriel Bollaffi, from USP. The Neapolitans took a liking to the snack and perfected it with good quality wheat for the dough and various toppings, especially cheese. Then was born the Pizza almost as we know it today. The only thing missing was the tomato, introduced to Italy in the 16th century from America and incorporated as an ingredient as basic as cheese.
