What is the oldest football team in the world?

reader question Eduardo Sales Neri, Salvador, BA

It’s Sheffield Football Club, from England. The team was formed on 24 October 1857 by William Perst and Nathaniel Creswick, two cricketers. As there were no other teams, the players formed two teams (married and single) to compete against each other. By decision of the directors, the team never turned professional and remains amateur until today. It currently plays in the eighth division of English football and its biggest prize was a Centenary Medal of the Order of Merit, awarded in 2004 by FIFA to the oldest team in the world.

The number of Sheffield fans can be estimated by the capacity of their stadium, the Stadium of Bright, which receives only 1,500 spectators.

In Brazil, the oldest club is the gaucho Sport Club Rio Grande, founded on July 19, 1900
