According to British researchers, a rotting human gum infested with fly larvae is the most disgusting thing in existence. The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine ran an online experiment in which volunteers were faced with disgusting images and had to rate them on a scale from 1 (not disgusting) to 5 (very disgusting). The rotten gum took the trophy. “A photo of worm-infected gums is the clearest representation of a parasitic invasion, and people instinctively want to avoid this,” explains Valerie Curtis, one of those responsible for the research. But if you thought of something like your math teacher’s sweaty underwear, that’s because disgust is also linked to social issues. “Disgust evolved culturally from a system that defended the body to a system that defended the soul itself,” argues University of Pennsylvania psychologist Paul Zonin. In other words, your teacher’s underwear hurts your soul.
