What is the fastest kick ever taken in a football match?

Unofficially, Brazilian left-back Ronny, from Sporting Lisbon, has already taken a kick at a speed of 222 km/h. But the kick, which took place in November 2006 during a game against Naval in the Portuguese championship, was not officially measured. This mark was reached by calculating the average speed that the ball reached to travel 16.5 meters in less than 27 hundredths of a second. Therefore, as the speed was calculated by analyzing the video and not by equipment installed in the field, the record could not enter the Guinness Book, which continues to register a kick of “only” 129 km/h as the record holder. If we compare it to other sports, however, even the kick of the Brazilian “bomb man” – as Ronny became known in Portugal – doesn’t seem so fast. In tennis, the record is 239 km/h, in golf it is 280 km/h and in jai-alai, little known around here, where the player uses a glove in the shape of a basket to throw the ball, the speed can exceed the 300 km/h. :-0

HOLD THIS!

We imagine what a penalty kick would look like with Ronny’s cannon

LOOK AT THE KICK

The ball would travel the 11 meters between the penalty spot and the goal line in 18 hundredths of a second. If the goalkeeper waited to see the trajectory of the ball, he would lose at least ten hundredths to process the information and would only have eight hundredths to move his body and try to defend. Just choosing the corner…

The safest chance for the goalkeeper to celebrate would be a kick out. In a shot à la Roberto Baggio, over the goal and very close to the crossbar, Ronny’s ball would only land 164 meters from the crossbar – of course, if nothing obstructed its flight, which would be unlikely in a stadium

WELL DONE

If the goalkeeper hit the corner and managed to stop the ball with some part of his body, the impact he cushioned would have an average force of 330 kgf, which can be said to be equivalent to the force that a person needs to use to support six bags of cement stacked in lap

HEAVY FOOT

To fire the 450 gram pellet at a speed of 222 km/h, Ronny’s kick power was approximately 285 kgf (kilogram-force). It’s hard to compare this to any other type of punch, but you can tell that the force of the kick is close to what a person needs to hold a gorilla in their arms.
