What is the «cola» in cola-type soft drinks?

(/)

It is the nut of a plant native to tropical Africa. The tree arrived in the Americas brought by slaves and gained names such as kola nut, orobó and sudan coffee. Collar trees produce a 2- to 5-centimeter nut, with the reddish color typical of soft drinks made from it. Thanks to the high concentration of caffeine, cola is used by Africans as a stimulant and digestive. Also, when chewed, it enhances the sweet taste of food consumed afterwards. Today, however, sodas only have kola nut in the name, because it was replaced in the formula by synthetic ingredients. :-S
