1. acrotray.exe is a process that is loaded at Windows startup after installing the full version of the Adobe Acrobat program. Acrotray is a tool that is displayed on the system taskbar.

Although it is not a dangerous process, it consumes memory and slows down Windows startup, so it is recommended to disable it from startup.

It is usually located in:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Distillr\AcroTray.exe
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Distillr\acrotray.exe
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\Acrotray.exe
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat 7.0\Distillr\Acrotray.exe
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\Acrotray.exe

This process can be disabled in two ways, depending on the version of Adobe Acrobat you have:
* Going to Start – Programs – Startup and remove the Acrobat Assistant shortcut.
* Going to Start – Run – write «msconfig», accept. Tab Home and disable Acrobat Assistant from the list.

2. There is a Trojan-type malware that uses the name «acrotray.exe» to go unnoticed.

The Trojan in question is Randex.DFJ and it usually spreads on networks with shared resources and workstations.

We have logs from other processes using the same file name:

• File: Acrotray.exe – Name: Acrotray
The task and file Acrotray.exe is installed together with the Adobe Acrobat authoring and editing utility. It is used when PDFs are created by non-Adobe applications.

Detected by Dr.Web security program as the malicious Trojan named Trojan.DownLoader11.30765 and also by Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as the malicious Trojan named Trojan.Agent.FMWB
