What are the half moon and small area for?

Even though we don’t understand very well what these markings are for, we’ve gotten so used to it that a football field without them is a bit lame. Therefore, Placar and explain the usefulness of these two designs and the corner flag.

1. HALF MOON

It is the visible part of a circle with the penalty spot as its center. Its main function is at the time of charging a maximum penalty. Before the kicker kicks the ball, the other players must be behind the penalty area and half moon lines.

2. SMALL AREA

It has two functions. When taking a goal kick, the ball cannot be outside the penalty area. When there is a fault in two shots (a “high foot”, for example) in the small area, the ball must be placed on its line and the barrier on the goal line. For the former referee and commentator José Roberto Wright, there is still a third function: “Within the small area, the goalkeeper cannot be touched in the air”. Another former referee, Emídio Marques de Mesquita, disagrees: “The goalkeeper cannot be harassed only when he has the ball”. In the rule, there is no mention of this supposed “goalkeeper protection territory”.

3. CORNER FLAG

It’s just a visual reference that guides everyone towards the touchline and baseline. The flag must be at least 1.50 meters high. Placing this frame in the middle of the field is optional. It is worth remembering that the flag cannot be removed when taking the corner kick. The player must also not lean on it during the dispute of a bid. If that happens, it’s a fault.
