Username Definition

(user name, nick, nickname, user, login name). Character string used to identify a user when entering a system (login), such as an online service, an operating system, a network, etc. Usually the username is accompanied by a unique password for it.

The username is usually associated with a single person, although there may be usernames for groups of people, and even generic usernames for any person. For example, the username for free internet access services is often the same as whoever wants to use it.

The characters used for the username usually have certain restrictions according to the system. Generally, only letters and numbers, and some symbols such as hyphens and underscores, are allowed. The rest of the characters are usually excluded.

In general, the user name is chosen by the person himself when registering in the system, although there are systems that assign it automatically (and then it may or may not be changed by the user). In general, systems do not accept two identical usernames (even if they have different passwords and other different data).

Problems with creating a username

When creating a username when registering for an online service or a game, different problems may arise. Here are some of them and their possible solutions:

They don’t accept my username

This occurs when your username does not respect certain characteristics. Many times online services place certain restrictions when choosing a username. For example, there are services that require the username to be an email address, others require the username to have a certain number of characters and certain types of characters.

When your username is rejected, a legend will surely appear indicating what the problem is. Unfortunately, sometimes that legend is difficult to interpret for people who are not computer scientists.

If you are being asked for a username without special characters, it means that you cannot include characters like $ % !, etc. in your name. Only use letters from A to Z for these cases.

They may also ask you for a username of a certain length. For example, if you are asked for at least 4 characters, it means that the username must have AT LEAST four letters. They can also ask you for a maximum number of characters. You must count how many you are employing.

Also note that many times systems do not accept usernames that have BLANK SPACES.

Username already exist

This is a very common alert message in online services that are very popular. Most of the typical usernames have already been taken by other users.

In this case you must arm yourself with patience and originality. The ideal in this case is to create a username and, at the end, add a couple of numbers. For example: soymaria28; myname4040; and the like.
