«Use reason» crusade against reggaeton

The initiative came from a photographer who decided to graphically express the violence that is heard in the popular lyrics of this urban genre and that threatens the integrity of women.

In less than 2 months, the campaign «Use reason, that music does not degrade your condition» has added almost 9,000 «I like it» in his crusade against reggaeton.

Colombian professional photographer Lineyl Ibanez and a group of students from Visual Design of the Jorge Tadeo Lozano Universityand points to the violent and lewd content of the popular music genre.

«The criticism is directed at the content of the songs that only leave women as sexual objects, that are not only attacked in the lyrics, but also in the videos are used as symbols of sex that more ‘advertisement’ of music ”explained Ibáñez in his account Facebook.

According to the site Excelsiorbefore opening the account “Use reason”, the images were posted on the photographer’s Facebook page and immediately began to go viral due to their connotation. One of the snapshots was shared in one day by almost a thousand users.

Through four photographs, some lyrics of the best-known reggaeton songs are literally illustrated. For example, the one inspired by the song «Bellaquera»of Yaga & Mackie Ranks and what sentence «In the kitchen I’m going to give you a table»shows a woman subdued by a man holding a stick, accompanied by the slogan “Use reason, don’t let music degrade your condition”.

Another image alludes to the theme «In the bed»of daddy yankeeone of the most successful and famous exponents of reggaeton.

“It is an active and real campaign that arises from a class initiative, it is a work carried out with students in the last semester of Visual Design at the university”Ibanez explained.

“PEOPLE WANT SOCIAL CHANGES AND SUPPORT THIS KIND OF INITIATIVES”

The reactions, of all kinds, were immediate: “(They were) mostly positive”specified Ibáñez, who added: “People want social changes and support this kind of initiative. Negative reactions are generally subjective, without weighty arguments, they are more aggressive and rude. (In addition) we have received proposals to publish the campaign in some media Venezuela, United States and Guatemala.

It is not the first time that reggaeton has been strongly criticized both for the way it is danced and for its sexually explicit lyrics referring to violence against women.
