The earthquakes in southern Turkey and northern Syria, which have so far claimed tens of thousands of lives and animals, are having a catastrophic impact on the entire population. The reconstruction work will take years. In addition to supporting HayTap’s search and rescue activities, ‘ assistance also includes paying for veterinary treatment and supplies, first aid and feeding, and providing safe, temporary housing for animals in need until a long-term solution is found.
Time is running out
disaster relief expert Dr. Jackson Zee, Head of the Disaster Preparedness and Resilience Program (DPRP) estimates there are a maximum of 10 days left to rescue animals alive before the vital window closes:
“I’ve witnessed quite a few natural disasters in my role, but the impact of devastating earthquakes is particularly severe. We must take immediate and effective action, but do so sensitively. The humanitarian crisis has not yet subsided. Our main goal now is to support our partners on the ground, with logistics, financial help and expertise. Many animals, including dogs, cows, but also birds and sheep, have already been reunited with their owners. Other animals that have tragically lost their human family are being taken to shelters in larger cities like Istanbul and Ankara. It is a race against time and every minute counts.”
