The inhabitants of Sri Lanka called some colored zircons «tourmali» which turned out to be a totally different mineral.

Where is it located

It is found in Brazil, USA, Canada, Africa, India, China, Russia, Afghanistan and, anecdotally, in Spain small crystals have been found in Andalusia.

History

For more than 2,300 years, this stone attracted the attention of the philosopher Theophrastus, which he called «lyngurion», probably a tourmaline, and which had the property of attracting straw, ashes or small pieces of wood when it was heated, putting manifest its pyroelectric qualities. For this same property it was called by the Dutch of the 18th century «asshentrekker» or «ash-puller».

The fact that it closely resembles various precious stones made it appear in various jewels such as those of the Russian crown of the 16th century, appearing to be rubies. Moreover, it is considered that a large part of the «considered» rubies that came from South America during the Portuguese colonization could actually be tourmalines.

The greatest admirer of tourmalines was Tzu Hsi, Dowager Empress who ruled China from 1860 to 1908. The Empress used the stone as a notch, in watch chain pins, or in the buttons of jackets of the Imperial Court and important people. The empress now rests on a tourmaline cushion.

This stone is an element that, in addition to being very beautiful, has special physical-chemical characteristics capable of generating electricity.

Therefore, thanks to this characteristic, tourmaline has been used in instruments to measure pressure changes and, due to its ability to generate ions, it has allowed it to be applied in electric hair straighteners, as well as in hair dryers, combined with ceramics. .

Likewise, due to its piezoelectric capacity, tourmaline has been used in water electrolysis processes, allowing it to acquire greater fluidity.

According to the zodiac its regency is in Pluto and Saturn. It is mentioned that its energetic irradiation helps internal personal growth. In the case of green tourmaline, it is interesting since clairvoyants claim to see and predict matters of the future through it. Mineralogical science does not believe in the magical issues mentioned, but they are provided here for mere anecdotal and informative purposes.

cleaning and care

There are different methods to clean and care for our tourmaline stone. One of the classic methods to cleanse and charge a crystal is to place it in a glass filled with salt water (preferably sea water) and leave it there for 24 hours. Once this is done we will have to rinse our tourmaline with warm tap water. With this we will be able to clean our stone. If we want to load it, we will have to apply heat, moderately. This heat is very important that it does not come from ourselves as it could carry negative energies.

To charge the tourmaline, it is usually buried underground for 3 or 4 days in a white cloth. With this we get the heat of the earth to recharge our tourmaline in a satisfactory way.

Another technique to charge tourmaline in a pure way and without using heat is to leave it in a quartz mantle. With this we will ensure that the energy of the quartz is transferred to our tourmaline stone and it is charged correctly, being ready for use.
