The splendid properties of the tangerine (part II)

This article is the continuation of a first installment about the benefits of tangerines, which can be seen here. As you will see, the tangerine has so many uses and properties that to exhaust them a long and detailed enumeration is required. That is what Andres Sierra generously shares with us. Enjoy.

Tangerine Benefits:

The consumption of peeled tangerine provides us with the virtues of its juice and its pulp.

Tangerine juice has the properties that we mentioned in the previous installment.

To reduce cholesterol: 1 glass of blended tangerine juice with ½ red apple and 1 tablespoon of soaked chia. 1 glass should be taken on an empty stomach for 30 days or more.

For digestive problems: a glass of blended tangerine juice with 1/2 apple, 1 slice of pineapple and a piece of fresh tangerine peel. It is recommended to take 1 glass 2 times a day before food.

To combat constipation: mandarin juice with black sapote: in mandarin juice, the pulp of the black sapote is crushed and consumed for several days on an empty stomach. If we can’t find black sapote, we can make the following juice: a glass of blended tangerine juice with 1 tablespoon of linseed seeds (soaked in water overnight) and 3 soaked prunes without pits. Blend everything together including the soaking water. Take this juice 1 or 2 times a day for 15 days or more.

For kidney problems: 1 glass of blended tangerine juice with 5 sprigs of parsley and 1 slice of pineapple. Take 3 glasses a day.

For colds and flu: 1 glass of blended tangerine juice with a cinnamon stick.

The whole fruit: (consume the pulp, peel and seed) is recommended to expel heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury) due to its high content of oxalic acid (the pulp), pectin and antioxidants (the peel): 2 whole tangerines can be passed through the juice extractor, sweeten the juice obtained with honey and drink it freshly made, otherwise it acquires a very bitter taste. Consume this juice on an empty stomach for 8 days in a row.

The tangerine peel:

It is warm, pungent and bitter (it acts on the digestion and the lungs); It is carminative (fights gases), stops coughing, dissolves phlegm and strengthens the stomach and digestive functions and improves the use of nutrients. In addition, it has a regulating effect on vital energy. If there is a dry cough, do not use tangerine peel tea.

For nausea, belching, vomiting, and upset stomach with loss of appetite, tangerine peel tea with fresh ginger root and cardamom seeds is recommended. Put 1 tbsp. grated ginger tureen and 1 tsp. of cardamom seed tea. Boil everything together for 5 minutes in 1 liter of water, then add the fresh peel of 3 tangerines, cover, turn off, rest covered for 10 minutes and strain. It can be taken sweetened with honey. When there is abdominal inflammation with pain in the pit of the stomach and poor digestion, it can be combined with peppermint and chamomile. This combination is also useful to combat intestinal gas.

According to Sintes Pross, a famous Spanish naturopathic doctor, now deceased, chewing tangerine peel is excellent for digestive functions because it not only stimulates the appetite but also the secretion of saliva and gastric juices.

For flu caused by an attack of atmospheric cold, tangerine peel tea combined with cinnamon is recommended. They are boiled for 10 min. 2 cinnamon sticks in 1 liter of water. Then add the fresh peel of 3 mandarins and cover the pot, turn off the heat, let it rest for 10 minutes and strain. It is taken hot sweetened with honey at a rate of 3 or 4 cups a day. This tea expels cold, fights phlegm and muscle and bone pain caused by cold.

In cases of mastitis, a decoction of dried tangerine peel and licorice is recommended, which according to clinical research carried out in China, gives good results in 70% of cases within a period of 2 to 3 days. The more chronic the mastitis was, the less effective the treatment was, and if it was already purulent, this treatment was useless.

Mandarin essential oil is obtained from the peel (see the section on aromatherapy below) which is used for digestive and nervous system problems. All these properties can be used, although attenuated, by ingesting tangerine peel tea.

The tangerine seed

It is peculiarly bitter and is considered to tonify the energy of the kidneys and decongest the liver, making it useful for treating male impotence and chronic kidney ailments. It is recommended to consume fasting for 30 days 1 tbsp. pot of freshly ground tangerine seeds mixed with honey.

For inguinal hernia with testicular pain: roast tangerine seeds and fennel seeds in equal parts. Grind them in a molcajete until they are powdered. You should take 3 to 10 gr. of that powder with a glass of hot sake (or tequila) before bed.

The flowers and leaves of the tangerine tree

They are recommended in infusion for nervous system problems. They put 5 gr. of flowers in 1 cup and pour boiling water. Cover, let rest and sweeten with honey. It is consumed at the rate of 1 cup a day on an empty stomach or at night for 15 days. The distilled water of the flowers constitutes the orange blossom water.

-The tea from the leaves is digestive and sedative. In traditional Chinese medicine it is considered a good liver cleanser.
