THE PRECIOUS STONES OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

The Dominican Republic is a paradise full of sun, beaches, parties and indescribable landscapes. Undoubtedly, nature was extensively generous with this small Caribbean island where, in addition, there is a very particular series of precious stones that only occur in its privileged soils. Another good number of the stones found on this island are not exclusive, but it does make the country one of the few growers of them. Among the most features we can mention:

Amber: it is a difficult stone to find in the world and the Dominican Republic is one of the few countries where they are found. Specifically in the city of Puerto Plata there are a series of authentic amber deposits and for this reason it is known as the “Amber Coast.”

In the Dominican Republic there are unique versions, in different presentations and sizes of this famous stone, blue amber being the best known.

Larimar: It is one of the stones that only exist in the Dominican Republic. It is a variety of pectolite that is recognized by its presentations in blue, turquoise, which are the highest quality, while the white stones are of inferior quality. For their part, those with a more greenish color are not well received in the jewelry market.

In the Dominican Republic, the jewelry stores where pieces with Larimar are sold are famous. Most of the pieces such as necklaces, earrings and rings where this stone is mounted are made of silver and sometimes they are designed in gold.

Sapphire: All the precious stones found in the Dominican Republic stand out for their beauty and good sales in the jewelry market. However, the jewel in the crown is the sapphire; which is not only a stone of extraordinary beauty but is one of the four most important gemstones in the world and therefore one of the most expensive.

Jade: it is one of the most abundant stones in the country. In 2012 a group of scientists discovered a variety known as jadeite in the Northern mountain range of the Dominican Republic. Thanks to its abundance and quality, jade could become the third stone in the country, as is the case with Larimar and amber. Jade is a stone especially sought after in the world of handmade jewelry and has a great economic value.

Aquamarine: it is a stone that is often compared to the emerald because of its tonality. Aquamarine is one of the most easily obtained stones in the Dominican Republicwhere they are used for making jewelry, thanks to the ease with which cuts can be made and other tasks necessary for their assembly in silver and gold pieces.

In America, these stones are only found in Brazil, in addition to the Dominican Republic, while in the rest of the world, the most famous come from the Urals area in Russia.

The presence of these precious stones from the Dominican Republic has developed to become an important economic activity in the country, that each year gets ready to promote the trade of the same and the work of local artisans.
