Kryptonite has been the protagonist of one of the most famous superhero stories of all time: «Superman», and although this stone has been created for entertainment purposes, we must know that there is a mineral that shares the same characteristics that are described of Kryptonite in the «Superman» comics, all of them in accordance with their chemical composition. However, the real Jadarite or Kryptonite differs in some respects.
This strange mineral was discovered by several geologists in the mines of the Jader region (Serbia, a European country) in 2006, coincidentally very close to the place where Lex Luthor found the Kryptonite mine in the first film of this legendary film saga. . After exhaustive analyzes and investigations carried out by several scientists from the Natural History Museum in London, it was concluded that this stone had almost the same chemical composition as the famous Kryptonite described in the comics, which was made up of potassium hydroxide. silicate, boron, fluorine and silicon, contained in the structure of the stone.
However, the Jadarite will not be able to live up to the famous name described in the comics, since the discovered mineral has nothing to do with Krypton, which is a colorless noble gas. Instead, its name derives from its place of origin. Another of the differences that exist between the real mineral and the fictitious one is the color. Jadarite is not green or shiny, rather it is white and grainy. It also does not emit any radiation, nor does it weaken any superhuman. It is believed that if larger deposits of the mineral were found, commercial uses could be attributed to it.
Real Kryptonite can bring great benefits to humanity in the near future, due to the properties of the elements that make up the mineral’s structure. The boron it contains could be used to encapsulate radioactive material in nuclear fission processes, playing an important role in the electrical energy production system. As well as boron, the other elements in the composition of this mineral could be exploited for their extraordinary properties.
As of May 9, 2007, the Jadarite was exposed to the world in the museum in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. To honor the story of the famous superhero, it is exhibited under a bright green light, just as the famous stone that weakens the powers of «Superman» is described, this in order to draw the attention of viewers. Be sure to visit this museum!
