TEODORA: A COLOSSAL EMERALD –

Colossal, is the characteristic of the emerald called «Teodora» weighing 11 kilos. Found in Brazil and carved in India, this impressive jewel has a unique majesty, equal to its enormous size. It’s practically as big as a watermelon, but far more valuable than anything imaginable.

Emeralds have always been a precious object due to the rarity of finding them. In fact, only in two countries is their search frequent, these are Brazil and Colombia. Among the most famous, it is worth highlighting the so-called Gachalá, found in 1967, with a value of 867 carats; the Fura that reached 11,000 carats, and the Tena that obtained a value of 2000 carats, but within them, the Teodora draws worldwide attention after being auctioned, and for its value of 57,500 carats.

The huge hypnotic dark green piece, Teodora, has been moved under heavy security, including armed guards, after its former owner, the jeweler, Mike Odenbach will auction it for $1.15 million to Canadian Regan Reaney.

In Odenbach’s statements, The disproportionate price that Teodora obtained during the auction is something extremely normal in the world of private collectors. «It’s not unusual for gemstones to sell for much higher value than appraised value, just based on who wants to own the world’s largest emerald.»

But apparently Teodora is not the largest piece found. The Teodora has three opponents of greater weight, one in Colombia, one in the United States, and one in Japan. About the first, it is known that it is valued at 11,000 carats, and has a weight of 2.2 kilos. The piece remains in its original state, after its owners have decided to keep it that way permanently.

It seems that Teodora’s Colombian pair was not much, but the rest of the pieces found are to be feared. Exhibited in the United States, specifically in the city of Los Angeles, this piece weighs no less than 341 kilos, far surpassing the favorite Teodora. Its name is Emerald from Bahia, and it remains intact in the granite with which it was discovered. Another peculiarity is that its owner is unknown, in fact, the Bahia Emerald is immersed in a legal dispute between several buyers.

If it seems that 341 kilos is enough, you can not imagine what comes next. An emerald of 536 kilograms. Found in Madagascar in 2007, the huge gemstone is currently on display at Hong Kongbut like the rest of the candidates, remains in its natural statewithout having carved or polished any of its parts. This is how Teodora ends up receiving the title of the largest carved emerald ever discovered.

Baptized as «the gift of the gods», the impact of the jewel in the hands of anyone is unique. Teodora stands out above any precious stone or gem found, and not for nothing, as it is an ostentatious item that demonstrates the magic of nature and its great generosity.
