In computing, storage space usually refers to the amount of data available or free on a storage medium. In order not to confuse users, it is best to speak of «free storage space», but the word «free» is not actually necessary, since, by definition, «space» means something empty.
Storage space, like storage capacity, is usually measured in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, etc.
For example, we have a storage medium (a hard drive) of 500 gigabytes, of which we have 100 gigabytes occupied. Therefore the free storage space on that hard drive will be 400 gigabytes.
Distinction between capacity and storage space
Storage capacity is not the same as storage space:
The storage capacity refers to the total storage that a storage medium can store, that is, it is the sum of free space and occupied space.
While saying «storage space» usually refers to the free or unused space of a storage medium.
However, as we have clarified, you can also say «free storage space» so there is no confusion.
