In computing, particularly in computer networks, a session is the duration of a connection using a session layer of a network protocol, or the duration of a connection between a user (the agent) and a server, usually involving the exchange of data. multiple data packets between the user’s computer and the server. A session is typically implemented as a layer in a network protocol (for example, telnet and FTP).
In cases of transport protocols where a formal session layer is not implemented (for example, UDP), or where the sessions at the session layer are generally short-lived (for example, HTTP), the sessions they can be maintained by a higher level program, using some method. For example, an HTTP exchange between a browser and a remote server may include a cookie, which allows a «session» to be maintained, with its own identifier, user data, preferences, etc.
Login is the option and action (logging in) of starting a session, usually using a username and password.
