Scientists warn about the climate clock: it is 7 years from the end

With the latest report from the Intergovernmental Plan on Climate Change (IPCC), the alerts were turned on again, since it is predicted that the Earth could no longer be habitable by 2050, if forceful actions are not taken to stop the millions of tons of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere annually. For decades there has been talk about reaching an environmental tipping point, but despite numerous protests to seek more sustainable ways, little has been done to transition to renewable energy. Not only the activists have raised their voices, but the scientists themselves are making calls to warn of the end, without due attention being paid to them.

More than a thousand scientists of 25 different nationalities recently led a protest after the latest IPCC report came to light. In this report, which is made up of the conclusions of more than 18,000 articles and investigations on the current climate crisis, the urgent need to curb greenhouse gas emissions is stipulated. But although a scenario such as the one currently experienced where the temperature is reaching 1.5ºC above pre-industrial values was predicted for some years now, world authorities have ignored the warnings.

Fiction is becoming reality

The narrative of movies like ‘Don’t Loop Up’ where scientists go out to call attention and are made invisible, is becoming a reality. The difference is that no celestial body is a threat against humanity, it is man’s own behaviors that have caused the current scenario where global warming is drowning the Earth.

For this reason, scientists themselves, those who have dedicated themselves to analyzing hard data about what is happening on our planet and know the real state of the environment, are raising their voices. A group called Rebellion of Scientists have released a statement warning of the serious consequences of not doing what is necessary to undermine greenhouse gas emissions. “Current actions and plans are grossly inadequate, and even these obligations are not being met,” they wrote in a statement.

NASA scientist Peter Kalmus also said during the protest that they have been trying to put their cards on the table for many decades, but «the world’s scientists have been ignored and it has to stop,» because «we’re going to lose everything.» . On different occasions Kalmus has launched articles in media such as The Guardian, talking about the climate crisis, asking that the fossil fuel industry be stopped, however, little echo has been caused among environmental policies, the efforts are insufficient.

We are 7 years from the end

On September 19, 2020, the so-called Climate Clock was launched, which is an artifact that combines science, technology, and art to show the world the current state of the planet, as well as the years that remain to take forceful action against the climate crisis. Its operation is simple, a clock that counts down the critical window of time we have to reach zero carbon emissions. Along with tracking progress on key solution pathways.

According to the Climate Clock, we have exactly 7 years and 91 days to achieve a complete transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Only in this way will it be possible to eradicate the toxic gas emissions that are responsible for the current climate crisis. Both government authorities, large companies and also citizens, we are all summoned to contribute to the achievement of this goal or otherwise, the conditions of the Earth will be affected until reaching a point of no return.
