Rhodochrosite StoneRhodochrosite Stone –

Rhodochrosite stone: It is a manganese carbonate. Its name derives from the Greek words rhodon meaning ‘pink’, and chroma meaning ‘color’. Rhodochrosite is a common mineral. Dating from the 13th century, this stone is almost legendary. Rhodochrosite is a very aesthetic and desirable mineral. Its deep red and deep pink crystals are highly sought after. It has been called “Argentine National Stone”.

It is preferably presented in layers or crusts of banded structure, with overlapping pink bands of different shades, from light to dark, with a fibrous texture, and separated from each other by a white to grayish white material (mixture of various carbonates of Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, and with a very low concentration of Manganese).

Rhodochrosite stone: Origin of its color

Rhodochrosite derives its pink color from manganese. It is usually a vivid bright pink color, but can also have different shades of pink; pink, red, faded pink, or slightly orange. Narrow bands within the stone are visible, and may be curved or slightly twisted.

These bands can be pink and red or pink and white. Chemical alternation will cause rhodochrosite to turn blackish or brownish. Rhodochrosite has a glassy to pearly luster and a rating of 4 on the hardness scale.

It is often found where manganese, copper, silver, and lead can be found, frequently in hydrothermal ore veins. Associated minerals include calcite, ankerite, alabandite, rhodonite, bementite, fluorite, manganite, quartz, galena, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Rhodochrosite is distinguished from rhodonite, another similar pinkish manganese mineral, by its lower hardness, as well as the brown or black crust that develops as a result of exposure to air.

Rhodochrosite stone: Where is it located

The rhodochrosite stalagmites and stalactites come from the Capillitas mine, Catamarca, Argentina. Deeply colored and beautiful scalenohedral crystals come from Peru at the Huayllapon mine in the Pasto Bueno district, Ancash; the Huaron mine, Cerro de Pasco; and the Uchucchacua mine, Oyon province, Lima department. Groupings of curved, saddle-shaped crystals were found in Huachocolpa, Huancavelca Department, Peru.

Why is it considered the national gemstone of Argentina?

Because although it was initially a by-product of the exploitation of other minerals that had their own market, fortunately there was a visionary, Franz Mansfeld, who presented it on the European continent, fascinated by its appearance and its exclusivity, in 1934.

And it was this presentation in society that first opened the Argentine gemological market, which continues to be very limited, not because of a lack of minerals, but rather because of adequate exploratory, extractive and productive policies.

Even today, and despite these limitations, rhodochrosites are synonymous with Argentine gemology. And these are highly valued stones in the world.
