2. When it means ‘need something’, it is normally used as a transitive: «He immersed himself in it as in a cryptic text that required several readings» (Pitol Juegos ); «The secretary remains for a few seconds in an attitude of waiting. When she notices that she is no longer required, she returns to her work »(Fernández Memoria). But probably by analogy with necessitate (→ necessitate), which can be used as a transitive (need) and as an intransitive (need something), the use of require as intransitive is being generalized today, in this sense, followed by a complement with de : «Happiness requires misfortune to balance itself, to become human» (Aguilar Error ).
3. When it means ‘ask someone for something’, what is requested can be expressed by means of a direct object, acting as an indirect person object: «Giving signs of utmost courtesy, he requested a private interview» (Mujica Escarabajo ); or else the person complement acts as direct and what is requested is expressed by means of a prepositional complement introduced by para or, less frequently, by a: «He requested the Mayor’s Office to put a stop to such a ruin» (Ayerra Lucha ); “She was required to cooperate with the police” (Ayala Fondo).
4. The voice requesting belongs to the family of this verb, derived directly from the Latin requirens, -entis (present participle of requirere), which is used, in the field of law, as an adjective and as a noun, with the sense of ‘ that makes a request’: «Subsequently, the requesting State formalizes the extradition request» (Time 7.1.98); «This label is only provided when the applicant proves that he is the owner of the film’s copyright» (Getino Mirada). Neither the required nor the required forms are considered correct.
