Petechiae are small spots that appear on the skin and range in color from purple, brown to dark red.
They are associated with subcutaneous bleeding caused by broken capillaries (small blood vessels).
Although petechiae are quite common, they are seen more frequently in patients with platelet or coagulation.
Usually, petechiae refer to spots that are smaller than a few millimeters in size, but, in some cases; Several petechiae may coalesce, resulting in a large patch that is more than a few centimeters in diameter (known as purpura) or that covers a larger area (termed ecchymosis).
They appear, above all, around the feet and ankles, and can also appear on the face and neck. Petechiae spots are not found under the sole of the foot because they are protected by fatty tissue.
Certain factors can trigger the development of petechiae such as:
- Direct trauma or injury that damages the capillaries
- Sudden increase in abdominal or cranial pressure caused by sneezing, laughing, vomiting, or fatigue in the stool.
- Thrombocytopenia, that is, low platelet count.
- autoimmune disorders
- skin aging
- Certain medications like warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, etc.
- Leukemia or cancer patients in radio o chemotherapy.
- Bacteremia or sepsis associated with an infection.

recommendations
Avoid excessive intake of foods like onions, garlic, etc. These foods are natural blood thinners and delay the coagulation process, increasing the risk of petechiae formation.
Consult with your doctor if petechiae are side effects of any of the medications that you are consuming
Take supplements of vitamin K in order to improve blood clotting ability or prevent petechiae marks.
