Dengue is an infection caused by a virus from the flavovirus family transmitted through the bite of the Aedes aegipti mosquito.
This virus has four varieties, that is, there are four dengue viruses that are similar to each other, but not the same, identified by numbers: dengue-1, dengue-2, dengue-3 and dengue-4.
This disease affects about 390 million people a year; Among them, about 500,000 suffer from severe dengue, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Dengue is frequent in the Caribbean islands, especially in Cuba, where there was an epidemic of dengue hemorrhagic fever in 1981; but it also exists in the countries of the Central American isthmus and in some countries of the Southern Cone. Since 1980, this disease has been documented in Mexico and Texas.
Dengue disease has two main forms: classic dengue and hemorrhagic dengue. The latter is the most serious form.
Classic dengue is characterized by a sudden onset of high fever with shaking chills, muscular pain and general breakdown. This situation usually lasts from two to four days and is followed by a period of time without fever, which lasts about 24 hours, in which the patient is well.
This is followed by a second febrile attack, which is accompanied by a skin rash, usually beginning on the extremities and then spreading to the trunk, with edema or swelling of the hands and feet. All this is accompanied by a headache, in such a way that the fever, the rash and the headache constitute the so-called “dengue triad”. The evolution of fever in the two mentioned phases is characteristic.
In summary, we can say that the symptoms of classic dengue are:
► High fever (40 °C).
► Headache (headache).
► Retro-orbital pain (behind the eyes).
► Conjunctival redness (red eyes).
► Sore throat.
► Muscle and joint pain.
► Nausea/vomiting.
► Acne (red spots on the skin).
► Inflammation of the lymph nodes, in some cases.
► Lack of appetite and difficulties in the sense of taste.
As for dengue hemorrhagic fever, it is a more serious form of dengue. It is usually the consequence of a second infection by a variety of the dengue virus in someone who had previously been infected by one of the other three varieties.
In hemorrhagic dengue, in addition to fever and prostration, there are petechiae, nose or intestinal bleeding, and is frequently accompanied by pneumonia. During the disease, the person may suffer a sudden drop in blood pressure, decreased platelets and have a generalized collapse, which can be fatal in 6 to 30% of those who suffer it.
The disease is transmitted by the bites of this mosquito, as mentioned and which, unlike the Anopheles of the malaria, it bites during the day, with two preferred times: in the two hours after sunrise and in the two hours before sunset. The vector mosquito has also been found in urban areas and in the southern United States.
The time between the bite of the infected mosquito and the appearance of the first symptoms is from one week to ten days.
