Profender for dogs: application, effect & side effects

Profender for dogs is an antiparasitic. It is used in quadrupeds suffering from a mixed parasitic infection.

In addition, it can be used to prevent various parasites.

Profender for dogs: what it is and what it is used for

Profender for dogs belongs to the group of antiparasitic drugs. It is mainly used for one acute worm infestation in dogs.

Profender for dogs is effective against the following types of worms:

Profender for dogs contains two active ingredients: emodepside and praziquantel.

This kills the worms – this applies both to the so-called adult stage and to the worm larvae.

Profender for dogs is available in the form of chewable tablets flavored with a meat flavor that is delicious for dogs.

You get the antiparasitic for small, medium-sized and large dogs. Profender for dogs contains 10 mg emodepside and 50 mg praziquantel.

Proper use and dosage of Profender in dogs

The correct dosage of Profender for dogs lies with 3 mg emodepside and 12 mg praziquantel per kilogram body weight of the fur nose.

Important

You should discuss the exact dosage with the treating veterinarian. Please refrain from using it yourself – the veterinarian will also decide here.

Application

There are a few things to keep in mind when using it. If your dog gets the tablet(s) in the morning, it should fast the night before.

This means that your dog must be given the pill on an empty stomach. After the administration of Profender, your dog must not be fed for at least four hours.

The reason: feed can prevent the active ingredients from developing optimally.

How fast does Profender work in dogs?

Profenders for dogs takes between 24 and 72 hoursuntil the worms in the dog’s intestinal tract are killed.

During this time the worming is effective, after the time has elapsed there is no longer any effect. This means that a renewed worm infestation is possible.

What side effects can Profender cause in dogs?

Profender can in dogs Side effects in the gastrointestinal tract cause. They usually manifest themselves in the form of vomiting and mild diarrhea.

Increased salivation and neurological abnormalities, including tremors, were also observed in some fur noses.

The side effects mentioned usually go away on their own. You should still keep an eye on them.

When should I not use Profender on my dog?

Profender for dogs is not the right wormer for four-legged friends younger than twelve weeks.

Even dogs that weigh less than three kilograms should not be treated with Profender.

In addition, a dose of Profender depends largely on whether the dog tolerates the two active ingredients.

At a Hypersensitivity to any of the active ingredients Profender is therefore also not to be used for dogs.

Do you have an Australian Shepherd or a Border Collie with the coat color Merle? Then Profender is also not recommended for dogs.

Due to the MDR1 gene defect associated with the coat color, there is a genetic intolerance to emodepside and praziquantel.

Side effects such as ataxia, cramps and tremors can occur here. It can also be that the active ingredients are extremely dangerous for the dogs.

Where is Profender for dogs available?

You get Profender for dogs either from your veterinarian or from pharmacies – here also online and in special (online) animal pharmacies.

The two active ingredients emodepside and praziquantel are prescription drugs, for which you need a prescription from your veterinarian.

What alternatives are there to Profender for dogs?

Alternatives to Profender for dogs are among others Panacur for dogs and Drontal for dogs.

Such alternatives make sense if your dog has had a bad experience with the active ingredients in Profender.

Because the alternatives contain other active ingredients such as fenbendazole, pyrantel embonate and febantel.

Other active ingredients that help against worms in dogs are also afoxolaner and fluralaner. They are contained in various spot-ons for dogs.
