Petra’s workhorses are taken care of

It was planned that , together with local partners, Princess Alia Foundation (PAF) and Petra Tourism Authorities (PDTRA), could continue the work in early 2020, which had started 5 years ago. The aim of the project remains to improve the health and working conditions of the working horses, donkeys and mules in the Park of Petra, Jordan.

Eight action projects were planned for 2020. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown meant that Jordan closed its borders and the Feldenstadt Petra remained closed.

From one day to the next, the owners of working horses, donkeys and mules around Petra were without income and had to survive somehow. Not only did the families suffer, but also the animals they had to take care of. Although the animals’ «workload» was reduced due to the lack of tourists, some horses continued to require medication. Unfortunately, the horse clinic in Petra was also closed. Luckily we stayed in touch with local volunteers who we knew could help. These helpers sent us pictures of horses that needed care but could not receive certain medications.

Apart from our work on site, we are very much hoping for the promised club cars, which were supposed to be delivered at the beginning of the year. These are to replace the horse-drawn carriages. The import has now been postponed to the end of the year.

We thank you for your support so that the important work on the ground can continue.

Also this year we will continue to provide the necessary veterinary and farriery services to further improve the well-being and health of the horses working in the Park of Petra. We have established a medical and identification database and will focus on collecting more data to better assess and care for the working horses in the park. We will ensure that all working animals in the park have access to clean water and shade, especially during the hot summer months.

Finally, and most importantly, we will focus on building the capacity of local farriers and veterinarians, and raising awareness and knowledge among horse owners and keepers on the best health and husbandry practices for their horses.
