Nicholas Symmes review: Huawei P40 PRO

I’ve been testing the new one for a couple of weeks Huawei P40 Pro and it seemed to me that it is a very complete team, despite the problems that the firm has had with Google in recent months. I leave the comments of the device here:

When taking the equipment you realize that it is built on a fairly premium base, its materials are aluminum alloy and it has a large screen. 6.58-inch OLEDs. At the back we find the classic protruding cameras, which give the phone a very interesting look. I want to make it clear that the line of colors are super attractive and it really is a beautiful smartphone from whichever point you look at it.

Returning to the screen, it has a resolution of 1080 x 2640 pixels with 90 hertz refresh rate. The famous notch of the front cameras that we had been seeing in previous models is eliminated, giving rise to a hole in the upper left (Samsung style), which in my opinion is much better and more comfortable. You still have the option to use the phone in dark mode, leaving the cameras practically hidden.

Apart from its facial recognition and the option to use a gesture on the screen to unlock the device, this model has a fingerprint reader on the screen, which works without problems and is quite fast from the simple gesture of putting your finger, which recognize and unlock.

Other important data, is that the phone uses Kirin 990, the latest processor of the brand. In addition, it has 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory that is expandable with external cards. As for the performance of the equipment, you will not have problems running games that need a lot of memory, nor will you see delays or speed problems when operating with different applications.

You have to be clear that in this team you will not have Google nor any of its services. But be careful because there are ways to easily download the most classic apps from the famous search engine, where you will have to investigate until you can download them from independent servers. One of the best known is APK (Android Application Package), which is an executable file for Android applications. It refers to a type of format for Android files, mostly applications, that allows them to be installed on a device without the need to use the Play Store. It can be a good solution.

Despite this, Huawei has been working on the App Gallery, which is its own MarketPlace, where, according to official brand data, they already have more than 400 million active users per month. As an example, they currently have download alternatives like Snapchat, Amazon, Tinder and Didi. In addition, several Chilean applications are available, such as online banking or other very useful ones, such as Ordenes Ya, Dafiti and Papa John’s.

And we go to the topic cameras Y Photography, where I must say that the brand has vast experience, especially in its constant collaboration with Leica. In fact, we can find on the back a 50 Mpx UltraVision main sensor, f / 1.9 with optical stabilization, another 40 Mpx video sensor and ultra wide angle. A 12 Mpx 5x Super Sensing Telephoto Lens and a rear ToF Sensor.

To my liking, I feel that in this new generation of cameras, Huawei managed to deliver greater realism to the photographs, where the reality of the colors makes it clear to us that it has improved a lot compared to other phone cameras on the market. Wide-angle photos are another important issue, offering great resolution.

As for the videos, has a 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, where you can also zoom up to 15 times in the recordings. The image stabilizer is another key point when it comes to being able to record a fairly professional video.

Refering to front camera, we have 32 Mpx, with an infrared camera that will allow you to have a more natural blur when you take a selfie. And you can also record videos in 4K, something that is new in this 2020 model.

In summary, I think it is a phone that has been working on continuing to improve and increase its features. Despite all the problems with Google, Huawei continues to fight to maintain its position in the market, something that is obviously very salvageable. I hope that soon they will be able to solve the differences and reincorporate Google in their interface. Two key points in the equipment are the camera and the screen, something that Huawei handles very well in each annual update of its terminals. A recommended team.
