NEW DIRECTIONS: Why are millennials migrating to regions?

A few years before the pandemic, a certain demographic trend had been registered that showed that millennials were gradually leaving the big cities to settle in places where there was more connection with nature.

Buenos Aires, Bogotá, the United States, Spain and, of course, Chile have been part of this process that was greatly accelerated by the pandemic.

Millennial life changes

Covid 19 hit the metropolises hard in different ways, such as the congestion of the health system, the closure of many sources of work, and the confinement between cement landscapes.

Ingredients that strongly pushed adults between 30 and 45 years old to move to other regions of the country.

«New home buyers in provinces outside the metropolitan area are single people or young couples with up to one child, divorced people and recently retired adults, in a smaller proportion,» said Joaquín Muñoz, Development Manager of the Castellani y Muñoz real estate company.

Machalí is a commune in the O’higgins Region that has shown a greater demand for housing by people from Santiago who seek to get away from the city.

The proximity to the capital of the country makes it ideal for those professionals who want to have a life away from the chaos of the metropolis, but with the ease of being able to access it quickly in case they need to carry out any paperwork or attend meetings.

“The people who are coming to live in Machalí are attracted by the tranquility, the good connection and location that the commune has, in addition to promoting closeness with nature and good environmental practices with sustainable real estate proposals that aim to meet the needs of a much more conscious buyer”, added Muñoz.

The pandemic was the turning point for many people who, after the extreme situations, began to value the environment.

In addition, teleworking policies opened up the opportunity to perform work from anywhere, with adequate technology and a good internet signal.

This increased mobility. It was no longer necessary to live in Santiago due to work obligations.

In addition to this tendency to seek greater natural contact, another important motivation is the lower cost of living that living in regions implies.

“Properties in Machalí, for example, generally cost 30 to 40% less than in Santiago, taking into account exactly the same type of housing. This offers the possibility of settling in a house with a patio, an option that is seen further away in the capital”, added Joaquín Muñoz.

There are plenty of reasons, the truth is that the new generation of adults, driven by covid-19, is committed to a better quality of life and family time before spending more time in the tireless city.

This also helps to promote decentralization and high congestion in the country’s urban centers.
