The main Mayan cities are located in countries such as Mexico, Guatemala and Hondurasthus forming one of the most important civilizations of all time, for its great astronomical contributions to modern man.
Also called Mesoamerican civilization, currently there is a record of more than 110 Mayan cities, which fortunately the vast majority is well preserved so fardespite the passing of the years. In relation to the structure of these famous cities, we can mention that the palaces and temples were always built around the main square in which the most important ceremonies for the people were performed, including offerings to the Gods.
Living near these important squares clearly represented the different social classes of the time. That is why the house of the princes and priests, considered the highest ranking for the Mayans, were a few meters from this important place, but the further away the houses were, even on the outskirts of the city, it was an indication that it was the house of the poorest inhabitants.
Tikal is one of the most important cities of the classic period, time in which the construction boom of imposing monuments and buildings began, giving way to imposing Mayan cities, accompanied by an artistic, political and intellectual awakening for the time. Its name translates as «place of voices», here you can see more than three thousand different types of buildings, among which are pyramids, temples, playing fields, among others. In 1979 Guatemala receives the wonderful news that its Mayan city is declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Chichen Itza is located in the state of Yucatan in Mexico, this incredible city has several courts in which typical ball games of the time were held, water wells for the inhabitants and others to throw the bodies of the sacrificed people, in offerings to the Gods. And we cannot fail to mention the imposing Temple of Kukulkan, a place where you can see how a serpent (God) descends, formed by the shadow that is projected on some platforms of the structure every solstice of the year, attracting thousands of tourists with in order to witness such a spectacle.
Honduras is not far behind, since among its lands we also find the cradles of these amazing cities, which have an impact today due to their great works of engineering and architecture, well ahead of their time. An example of them is Copán, located in a Honduran department that bears the same name, there are records of this city between the years 400 and 800 AD.
The best thing about these preserved Mayan cities is that they can be visited by everyone on the next vacation., thus having the opportunity to enter a culture, which every day catches us more for its discoveries and beliefs.
