The health benefits – often attributed to red wine – are believed to be the result of resveratrol. East phenolic compound it’s found on the grape skinsas well as in the peanut and other fruits like raspberries and blueberries.

This compound has been the subject of much excitement in the scientific and health communities.

While more research is needed (particularly with human subjects), several studies have indicated that resveratrol has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which can help with everything, from heart disease and cancer to obesity and weight loss.

It is important to note that resveratrol is usually found in red wine, not white.

One study indicated that resveratrol helps convert white fat, which stores energy, into brown fat, that burns calories to help us keep warm and can lead to less overall weight gain. The problem? The study is performed on mice. Still, the implications are exciting. It’s enough to make us want to pour ourselves a glass of wine with dinner. You know, just in case.

How do we know if a glass of wine can help us lose weight?

Wine, and indeed most alcohol, acts as a appetite suppressant. If you drink a glass of wine with your meal, it can lower your overall hunger levels and cause you to eat a smaller portion of food and therefore consume fewer calories overall.

Wine also helps with digestion.

Red wine, in particular, is thought of as a boon to the ‘good’ bacteria in your digestive tract that break down food.

Wine and weight loss: the reality

The University of Alberta (Canada) was commissioned to carry out this study in which it was discovered that red wine contains a substance called resveratrol that can provide us benefits similar to those provided by do an hour of training in the gym or outdoors.

Drinking a glass of red wine a day is good for the heart. That was known until now. But now we have to add other aspects to the list. With this drink we can:

Improve physical performance

have more muscle strength

Regulate blood flow to the heart

The Journal of Physiology published this study where it was also stated that resveratrol can be a substitute for physical exercise for certain people. The principal investigator, Jason Dyckindicated that the right measure is a glass with dinner.

Of course, because it is not a matter of exaggerating consumption arguing «which is good for health and saves me from going to the gym.»

While some of the phenolic compounds in wine may help with weight loss, there is one essential fact that you will never forget. Although wine does not contain fat, if you consume more calories than you burn, you will not lose weight.

  • white and rosé wine have fewer calories than red wines.
  • If you’re watching your calorie intake, avoid dessert wines such as Port, Sauternes and completely sweet Rieslings.
  • Generally, the higher the alcohol by volume (ABV), the the more calories there will be in your wine. However, some low-alcohol wines can be very high in calories due to the fact that they can have higher sugar content. Check the label before buying.
  • Measure your consumption. This way you can keep track of how much wine you consume and see your calorie count. To get the benefits found in wine, without going overboard, stick to one glass consumption.
  • If you’re worried about wasting wine, invest in a wine preservation system to keep your bottle fresh, or buy smaller socks.
  • Although there are plenty of headlines stating that «Drinking two glasses of red wine before bed can help you lose weight,» that’s not the best advice. Enjoy a wine with a meal and allow your body time to digest the contents of your stomach before you go to bed.
  • As always, it’s good to practice moderation when it comes to enjoying a glass of wine during the week.
  • The amount of calories varies depending on the wine.
