Is it true that only in the human species do females experience orgasm?

By the definition that experts in sexuality give to orgasm, yes, it is true. No female in the animal world experiences the same delicious pleasure as women. “It’s not just a physical sensation, but also an emotional one, and this has no parallel among animals,” says psychologist Oswaldo Rodrigues, from the Instituto Paulista de Sexualidade, in São Paulo (SP). The emotional part is so important in this moment of well-being that some women submitted to clinical tests on sexuality complain about not reaching the peak of orgasm even when the laboratory data insist on pointing out their physical signs, such as acceleration of the heartbeat, intense contraction of the muscles in the pubic region and increased body temperature. The fact that orgasm is exclusive to women doesn’t mean that females of other species don’t take off their cones there.

“It’s difficult to know exactly what an animal feels, but depending on the species, they experience pleasure or something that indicates pleasure”, says ethologist (specialist in animal behavior) César Ades, from USP. Mammalian females, for example, have the so-called estrus, a period when they are ready to bear young and do everything they can to attract males. “Pleasure in this case would be a kind of prize to stimulate reproduction”, says César. Even when not in heat, females of some species keep their sex lives in full swing. Marmoset monkeys are a good example. They form almost always monogamous couples who have sex even outside the female’s reproductive phase. Rala-e-roll in this case also has an important social component, uniting the couple so that they can raise their children together. Bonobos, a type of chimpanzee, do not go to this extreme of «marmoset marriage». The females of the species have a much more liberal behavior and tend to exchange caresses with each other.
