How were years counted before Christ?

reader question Lucas Ribeiro, Rio de Janeiro, RJ

It depends. The first farmers already knew the seasons and calculated the time between one summer and another. To establish a countdown, each civilization had its own way. Egyptians set the milestone around 3000 BC For the Greeks, it was the year of the first Olympics (around 2500 BC). For the Romans, the founding of Rome (753 BC). Christian standardization, on the other hand, emerged long after Christ, in 525, when Pope John I decided to institute the same calendar for the Church around the world.
